JOB SUMMARY:

The City of Birmingham is seeking well-qualified Recreation Center Directors to oversee the planning, implementation, and administration of recreational programs and facilities. Incumbents establish policies, procedures, and guidelines for athletic programs, leagues, and special events; develop and monitor departmental budgets; and oversee the maintenance and inventory of citywide parks and recreational facilities. Recreation Center Directors also supervise and develop subordinate staff by providing training, guidance, and performance feedback. In addition, they collaborate with the public, city officials, and media representatives to promote Parks and Recreation programs, special events, and community engagement initiatives.

$40,934 - $63,502

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Driver's license.

  • Experience planning and organizing recreational activities/programs (e.g., arts/crafts classes, dance, sports leagues) for a variety of audiences including youth, adults, and senior citizens.

  • Experience monitoring inventory and requesting/obtaining approval for purchasing supplies and equipment.

  • Supervisory experience reviewing other’s performance and delegating and assigning tasks in a work setting.

  • Experience instructing or training individuals or groups (e.g., volunteers, staff, and program participants).

  • Experience assisting with facility operations (e.g., inspecting grounds, reporting maintenance issues, performing minor repairs).

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.

  • Communicates and interacts with various groups of people (e.g., public, recreation center patrons, city officials, media outlets) to inform and promote parks and recreation activities and special events and to answer questions, handle concerns, and gather feedback.

  • Develops and implements policies, procedures, and guidelines for the Recreation Center and its associated programs and events by staying abreast of best practices in the parks and recreation industry and conferring with staff to ensure that operations are conducted in a safe and efficient manner that meet the needs of the community.

  • Ensures the inspection and maintenance activities of recreational facilities and equipment by ensuring vehicles are maintained, completing work orders, and reporting maintenance issues to ensure a safe and operational working environment.

  • Oversees the day-to-day operations and management of a Recreation Center by meeting with staff to coordinate activities, and providing assistance to community members and staff to ensure the safe and efficient operations of facilities.

  • Participates in classes, activities, and other programs by serving as a class instructor, game official, etc. in order to facilitate a variety of activities when no other staff is available to lead or prep for activities.

  • Plans, schedules, and oversees Recreation Center events and programs, including recreational programs, sports leagues, special events, etc. by working with various staff and following established policies and procedures in order to ensure services provided by the Recreation Center meet the needs of the community.

  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job involves significant and concerted physical exertion required for regular prolonged periods of walking, running, stooping, kneeling, crouching, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily in employer-owned facilities such as community civic centers, recreation centers, etc. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc. Work requires significant interaction with the public including youth, adults, and senior citizens.
