JOB SUMMARY:

Jefferson County Department of Health is seeking a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (WIC) to be responsible for providing breastfeeding support to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC participants by offering education, references to professional resources, and encouragement to assist parents in initiating and continuing their breastfeeding journey. Employees in this job class are also expected to perform various administrative activities by creating and updating files and documents, as well as tracking information using various forms and computer systems to maintain accurate records and document organizational and departmental activities. Breastfeeding Peers Counselors are expected to provide support services both in person and remotely via virtual sessions and/or phone calls. Additionally, they engage in activities designed to ensure professional development, stay informed about advancements in the field, and maintain knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Experience breast/chest feeding at least one baby for a minimum of six (6) months.

  • Successful completion of a WIC approved breastfeeding support training course upon hire.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by the Jefferson County Department of Health. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • Previous participation in the WIC program.

  • Experience working in a remote position providing services using various virtual communication platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, phone).

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Performs various administrative activities by creating and updating files and documents, and tracking information using various forms and computer systems in order to maintain records and document organization/department activities.

  • Provides breastfeeding support to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC participants by providing education, references to professional resources, and encouragement to assist parents in initiating and continuing their breastfeeding journey.

  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.

  • Assists in the facilitation of breastfeeding support groups and classes to provide information to breastfeeding families.

  • Assists WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects, such as World Breastfeeding Week, and duties as assigned.

  • Adheres to WIC Breastfeeding curricula and NH Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Job is a part-time position. Work is conducted both remotely and on-site within medical clinics or client homes. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc. Work involves the use of virtual meeting software.
