JOB SUMMARY:

The City of Birmingham is seeking to hire a Painter to prepare surfaces and apply paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to buildings, structures, equipment, and furniture for protection and aesthetic purposes. Duties include preparing work sites and equipment, sanding, stripping, or pressure washing surfaces, and selecting and mixing appropriate coatings. The Painter follows established safety procedures, inspects finished work to ensure quality, and completes post-painting tasks such as equipment maintenance, documentation, site cleanup, and proper disposal of materials in accordance with departmental and OSHA requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:


Option A:

  • Driver's license.

  • Commercial Painter Apprenticeship Program Graduate.

Option B:

  • Driver's license.

  • Bridge/Industrial Painter Apprenticeship Program Graduate.

Option C:

  • Driver's license.

  • Experience working in a commercial, industrial, or facilities operations paint setting (i.e., in a paint craft setting).

  • Experience mixing paints and primers.

  • Experience priming, painting, and preparing different surface types (e.g. drywall, plaster, metal, wood, and masonry).

  • Experience using chemicals such as thinners and cleaners.

  • Experience setting up and working from scaffolding, lifts, and ladders.

  • Experience using the correct sealant (e.g., caulking) for the materials being painted.

  • Experience matching paints and determining what types of paints to use on different surfaces.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Conducts pre-painting work activities to include communication, preparing equipment needed for work orders, and driving to work sites.

  • Practices appropriate precautions and general safety before and during painting activities, to include conducting safety checks on equipment, reading labels, spotting co-workers, alerting public, wearing protective gear, and attending safety meetings.

  • Prepares surfaces for application of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, lacquer, etc., to include sanding, stripping, pressure washing, etc., for buildings, structures, equipment, and/or furniture.

  • Selects, mixes, and applies appropriate paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to surfaces, trimmings, or fixtures for buildings, structures, equipment, and/or furniture for rust prevention or aesthetic purposes. This includes examining finished surfaces to verify conformance to specifications.

  • Completes post-painting work activities to include conducting preventive maintenance of all paint-related equipment, documenting activities (e.g., completing forms, checklists, work orders, etc.), cleaning work sites, replacing materials, and disposing of stains, paints, lacquers, varnishes, enamels, etc., as required by the jurisdiction, department, and/or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job involves occasional moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, and climbing. May involve regular lifting of items or objects weighing up to 75 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed both within employer-owned facilities such as workshop, warehouse, or station and in field locations such as external places of business, residence, and construction worksites. Work involves use of various hand tools such as paint brushes, rollers, hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. and electrical, gas, or air powered tools and equipment such as paint guns and pressure washers. May have to work at heights up to 100 feet. May be exposed to weather conditions such as extreme hot or cold temperatures.
