Pharmacy Technicians within the Jefferson County Department of Health work with pharmacists to help prepare and give out prescription medication. They take prescriptions over the phone and in person, work with health professionals and customers, help mix medicines, count pills, measure medication, label and give instructions for medicine, and help maintain inventory. Pharmacy Techs are the liaison between the public and pharmacists, helping set up consultations and recommendations. Individuals in this role are also responsible for taking payment for prescriptions and balancing the money collected. Their work is performed according to specific guidelines and is directed and reviewed by a pharmacist.COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Must possess a current, active Pharmacy Technician registration with the Alabama Board of Pharmacy.
The ability to obtain a National Pharmacy certification (e.g., ICPT - Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians or PTCB - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) within the first nine months of employment.
Experience entering and maintaining data using computerized systems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Merit System agencies. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection process.
National Pharmacy Certification (e.g., ICPT - Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians or PTCB - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board).
Experience interacting with and assisting individuals from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Assists the Pharmacist in dispensing, counting and measuring medications; operates computer terminal to enter prescriptions and to update pharmacy records.
Maintains appropriate inventories of pharmaceutical supplies and equipment; types and prepares requisitions; checks invoice for correct price and fills out credit forms if necessary.
Restocks floor stock and surgery carts; replaces items used; checks for outdated/expired items; delivers to various floors or units as required; receives incoming stock and places in appropriate location.
Prepares I.V. antibiotics for patients under direct supervision of Pharmacist; updates unit dose profile for current intravenous products.
Operates a cash register to collect monies for prescriptions and over the counter medications; counts and balances monies.
Answers questions regarding pharmacy procedures; refers technical questions to Pharmacist on duty.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve regular lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily within medical or healthcare facilities. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc. Work involves use of medical tools and equipment necessary for the care and/or diagnosis of healthcare patients.EEO STATEMENT:
