JOB SUMMARY:

The City of Vestavia Hills is seeking well-qualified, motivated Recreation and Aquatics Supervisors responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing a variety of recreational and aquatic programs and facilities. They manage daily operations at multiple recreation centers and swimming pools, ensuring safety, maintenance, and compliance with regulations. This includes supervising staff, coordinating facility schedules, and conducting inspections to maintain functionality and safety standards. These supervisors also assist in budget preparation and administration, monitor expenditures, and help develop goals and priorities for the Parks and Recreation Department. Their work balances administrative duties with on-site facility management, requiring flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • American Red Cross Basic Lifeguard Training Certificate.

  • Valid Pool Operator's Certification from an accredited organization within six months of employment.

  • Driver's license.

  • Experience supervising employees which includes tasks such as scheduling employees, coordinating the work activities of subordinates, delegating tasks, training and teaching others, conducting performance appraisals, reviewing the work of subordinate staff.

  • Experience working as a parks and recreation professional that includes planning, implementation, and evaluating recreational programs at multiple sites (including swimming pools and/or recreation centers).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by The City of Vestavia Hills. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • Certified Pool Operator.

  • Water Safety Instructor.

  • Lifeguard Instructor.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Supervises the day-to-day operation of the swimming pools by ensuring pools are properly maintained, functioning safely, and repaired when needed, and that the pools are staffed and scheduled for use appropriately.

  • Directs the day-to-day operations of recreation and aquatic facilities and grounds by coordinating with staff to develop strategic plans and establish goals and priorities, ensuring facilities and grounds are properly maintained, and carrying out management responsibilities to ensure that all recreation and aquatic facilities are well managed.

  • Manages recreational activities, leagues, programs, and special events by researching and developing program or event content, assessing the needs of the program or event, developing a budget, and working wth staff to create progams or events that will be successful for the recreation facility.

  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time. At times, job may require light to moderate physical exertion, including lifting, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or twisting. Job may also involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting as well as regular field visits to outdoor worksites. Incumbents may be required to work nights and/or weekends. Job may include exposure to potentially hazardous working conditions (e.g., moving vehicles, biological and/or chemical hazards, etc.). Job may also require exposure to inclement weather when working outdoors (e.g., extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, etc.).
