JOB SUMMARY:

The City of Birmingham Brush and Trash Supervisors coordinate and oversee multiple brush or work crews responsible for collecting brush, trash, and performing clean-up activities within a designated area. Supervisors drive a pick-up truck along established routes to monitor crew progress at various worksites. Assignments are provided by a Public Works Supervisor or other supervisors, who set objectives, priorities, and deadlines, and provide guidance on unusual tasks

Birmingham: $20.66 - $32.06

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License.

  • Experience using maps, GPS, to navigate.

  • Experience as a lead worker assigning and reviewing work and monitoring progress on work assignments.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Coordinates the daily activities of brush and trash crews by assigning routes to crews, resolving staffing issues, and ensuring that required supplies are available to crews in order to ensure timely and efficient pickup of brush and trash/refuse. able in order to provide timely and efficient pickup of brush and trash/refuse.

  • Provides service to internal and/or external customers.

  • Performs departmental administrative duties such as documenting incidents and writing reports to ensure proper documentation is on file, record keeping is up to date, and daily work activities are completed.

  • Inspects the work of brush and trash crews by visually checking the work that has been performed to ensure that trash or brush is collected according to schedule, complaints are resolved, and safety and health issues are addressed.

  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work requires driving a vehicle to various work sites daily. Work may also require occasional walking, bending, lifting, and physical dexterity when assisting or training personnel in brush and trash collection.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites such as residential neighborhoods, landfills, etc. Work involves operating heavy equipment such as trucks, as well as a variety of hand tools. Job may require exposure to potentially hazardous work conditions (e.g., working in and around traffic, in and around landfills, working in and around heavy equipment). Job may also require exposure to inclement weather when working outdoors (e.g., extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind), as well as working around foul odors and potentially harmful waste.
