JOB SUMMARY:

The City of Vestavia Hills is seeking a skilled Construction Supervisor to oversee the construction, maintenance, and repair of municipal projects. This position plans, assigns, and evaluates the work of skilled and unskilled personnel, ensuring quality and efficiency in project execution. Responsibilities include supervising the installation of pipelines, culverts, and drainage systems, and addressing issues in accordance with established policies and procedures. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong leadership, problem-solving, and project management skills.

Vestavia Hills: $26.47 - $41.07

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

1.    Class A Commercial Driver's License
2.    Experience operating medium to heavy construction equipment such as a track excavator, front end loader, boom truck/dump truck, backhoe, bulldozer, roll grader, or asphalt paver.
3.    Experience in leading crews and participating in maintenance and/or construction (sidewalks, roads, paving, pipes, etc.).
4.    Experience setting up traffic work zones using cones, flaggers, signs, and other safety equipment.
5.    Experience in the use of materials and methods involved in at least ONE of the following: 
•    heavy road construction
•    roadway paving
•    repair and installation of culverts and storm sewer pipes
•    repair and installation of storm sewer inlet/manhole covers
•    bridge maintenance and construction
•    removal of non-native sediments from creeks
•    installation of commercial grade fencing and gates
•    sidewalk construction and maintenance
•    curb and gutter installation and repair

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Provides instruction and participates in in biosolids collection, transport, and maintenance activities ensuring adherence to regulations and established protocol.

  • Coordinates and participates in the demolition of condemned and unsafe structures by locating property to be demolished, examines property and determines what needs to be done prior to demolition, and working with crews to execute demolition using standard procedures and ensuring the safety of the crew.

  • Directs and participates in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of culverts, storm and sanitary sewers, manholes, sidewalks by preparing surfaces for work, monitoring safety and surroundings, observing crews, using various tools, and operating appropriate equipment according to established policies and procedures to complete assignments.

  • Directs and participates in park construction and maintenance by observing and directing tasks being performed, identifying tools and materials needed to complete work, and identifying and correcting damage to property during construction and maintenance activities in order to complete tasks.

  • Coordinates the daily activities of construction crews by reviewing work orders and assigning work, coordinating efforts across departments, and preparing the truck, equipment, materials, and tools for the day in order to complete daily tasks.

  • Coordinates and participates in the demolition of condemned and unsafe structures by locating property to be demolished, examines property and determines what needs to be done prior to demolition, and working with crews to execute demolition using standard procedures and ensuring the safety of the crew.

  • Participates in street/road paving and maintenance activities by ensuring that crews and workers are performing work according to appropriate guidelines and standards through observation of work and/or performing various tasks along with the crew in an effort to complete projects.

  • Prepares the crew, equipment, and materials upon arrival at worksite by ensuring safety protocol is followed, delegating tasks for completion, observing work being performed, and communicating with those on-site in order to ensure that work is performed according to standards and procedures.

  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.

  • Performs end of day activities including truck and equipment cleaning, crew head count, tool and equipment loading, paperwork, and prep for the next day in order to ensure work is completed for the day and prep work is completed for the next day of work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites such as roadways and construction sites. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc. Work may also involve the use of various hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. May be exposed to weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions such as near roadway traffic, etc.
