The City of Birmingham is seeking a well-qualified, motivated Municipal Court Probation Officer I to implement and oversee court-ordered probation activities for adult offenders. This job class manages cases and supervises clients ordered to probation by maintaining contact with offenders to ensure compliance with court orders, attending court hearings, preparing various documentation, developing relationships with community resources, and attending professional development events.Candidates must obtain a Court Monitoring Specialist certification. Work is performed in both office and courtroom settings. This position operates under the direct supervision of the Court Administrator, Municipal Court Probation Administrator, Senior Probation Officer, and presiding judge, with general guidance from the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Driver’s license.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
No felony convictions or misdemeanors of moral turpitude including but not limited to domestic violence or theft.
Ability to obtain a Court Monitoring Specialist (CMS) certification within one year of employment (Note: there is no financial cost to the employee for obtaining this certification).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by the City of Birmingham. These qualifications may be considered by the hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
Experience providing case management (e.g., probation, parole, medical, social work).
Experience interpreting information from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Completes intake procedures by reviewing probationers’ background information, interviewing probationers, and assessing risk and needs to gather information about the probationer.
Monitors probation cases through gathering information relevant to cases and communicating with associated departments/agencies to help ensure compliance with court orders.
Performs administrative tasks such as documentation, maintaining information files, and processing paperwork to ensure files on all probationers are up-to-date and accessible for court staff.
Performs drug testing tasks including collection, storage, and disposal of urine samples in accordance with applicable state and federal drug testing standards and departmental policies and procedures in order to detect the presence of drugs and/or alcohol and to document results.
Develops and maintains cooperative relationships by serving as a liaison for the department to correspond with coworkers, other departments, divisions, agencies, and community resources.
Attends court hearings to provide testimony on probation cases and to gather referrals and other pertinent information on probationers.
Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job is primarily sedentary, involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted both indoors in office settings as well as courtroom settings. Work involves the use of standard office equipment, such as a computer, phone, copier, etc. Employees may be exposed to bodily fluids such as urine.EEO STATEMENT:
