JOB SUMMARY:

The city of Birmingham is seeking a well qualified and motivated Landscape Architect to develop conceptual and detailed construction plans and specifications for landscape architectural projects. Landscape Architects are responsible for reviewing engineering construction plans to ensure compliance with zoning and subdivision regulations within the project location. They conduct feasibility studies to ensure that projects are viable, and consider any obstacles that may occur during construction. Individuals within this job class assist with zoning by reviewing and processing subdivision and re-zoning requests to ensure all state and county codes and regulations are met. Landscape Architects manage contracts throughout a project’s life cycle, and ensure that contract obligations are met and performed to specifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Licensed as a Landscape Architect in the State of Alabama or able to obtain licensure within one year of employment.

  • Experience with landscape design principles and techniques, including the preparation of site plans and/or construction drawings using computer-aided drafting and design applications.

  • Experience reviewing site plans and/or construction drawings to ensure compliance with local regulations.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following is a job-related qualification deemed desirable by the City of Birmingham. This qualification may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree or higher in Landscape Architecture.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

Reviews and processes subdivision requests and ensures that all state and county codes and regulations are met.
Reviews and processes re-zoning requests and ensures that all state and county codes and regulations are met.
Reviews engineering construction plans for compliance with zoning and subdivision regulations.
Administers flood plain regulations.
Develops conceptual plans and/or detailed construction plans and specification for landscape architectural projects.
Performs neighborhood and target area analysis and building complex schematic designs and makes feasibility studies for desirable land developments.
Manages contracts and construction implementation for the life of the project.
Determines flood plain status and base flood elevations of individual properties by interpreting FEMA flood studies.
Meets with developers and their consultants to advise them of regulatory issues affecting the development or proposal.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is conducted mostly indoors in an office setting, with periodic field visits to external indoor or outdoor locations. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
