JOB SUMMARY:

Jefferson County Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) Shift Supervisors are typically responsible for supervising WRF operators of all levels and ensuring proper and safe plant operations. A person working in this position is expected to oversee, and at times participate in the operation and general and preventative maintenance of various equipment, stations, buildings, and locations throughout the water reclamation facility. Shift supervisors are also responsible for conducting and monitoring training of WRF staff to provide knowledge and understanding of work processes to ensure compliance with procedures and standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Driver's license.

  • Possession of an active Grade IV Wastewater Certification from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) - or the ability to obtain certification through reciprocity within 6 months of hire.

  • Experience operating in a Class III or Class IV municipal wastewater treatment plant, performing activities involving the wastewater treatment processes and equipment, water quality testing, and recording information for reports.

  • Experience reading and interpreting regulatory requirements for wastewater treatment facilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Jefferson County. These qualifications may be considered by Jefferson County when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • Three years of experience as a Water Reclamation Facility Operator at a Grade III plant or higher.  

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Communicates pertinent information regarding WWTP operations and guidelines to organization staff, public, and governing agencies.

  • Oversees and, when necessary, performs WWTP operations activities including performing detailed inspections of the wastewater flow and the operating equipment, gathering information plant equipment and gauges and making necessary operational adjustments to ensure proper and safe plant functioning.

  • Oversees and participates in laboratory operations by collecting samples, conducting field and lab tests, performing laboratory tests, recording calculations and test results and transposing results into monthly operating reports and reviewing all related work conducted by laboratory staff.

  • Oversees the maintenance of WWTP equipment inventory such as spare parts, tools, various equipment, lubricants, custodial, laboratory supplies, etc. in order to ensure efficient and uninterrupted plant operations.

  • Oversees and, when necessary, participates in the performance of general and preventative maintenance on various equipment, stations, buildings, and locations throughout the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to ensure proper and safe plant operations.

  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.

  • Coordinates and conducts training of WWTP staff involved in a variety of WWTP operations by developing training programs/content, staying abreast with current wastewater guidelines, teaching courses, and providing orientation for new employees.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 75 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily in and around wastewater treatment plants. Work involves the use of various hand and power tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, grinders, saws etc. Job may require exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards, including raw sewage. Job may also require exposure to airborne contaminants (e.g., dust, odors, smoke, toxic fumes).
